Mongolia

Home of the infamous Genghis Khan, whose army once occupied two thirds of the known world. A miraculous achievement considering Mongolia is the lowest populated independent country and second largest landlocked country in the world.

There are only 2,200,000 people living in Mongolia, over 30% of which are nomadic. Mongolia’s nomadic people are renowned for their friendship, taking in travellers and welcoming them into their home. It is quite amazing to know people who own next to nothing, yet sharing what they do have.

The largest city is Ulan Bataar, with a population of around 700,000 people. I visited that city first, then Terelj, where I spent time with a nomadic family, who welcomed me with fermented mare milk, and later took me on a short horse trek.
