One of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, around 60% of the population is unemployed. Nicaragua is still struggling to overcome the after affects of dictatorship, civil war and natural calamities. Saying that, the country’s tourist industry, which had virtually collapsed by the 1990′s has made a strong revival, despite still being the least visited nation in the region.
Nicaragua is home to the largest freshwater lake in Central America, and the only freshwater shark in the world. The main island in the lake is Omepete, also the largest freshwater island in the world and a huge attraction with tourists.
